The Fifth Toy Story Film Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Versus a Digital Device
Exactly 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story movie was released, launching the animation giant as a leading film company and introducing viewers to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
In 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a brief look into the plot but leaving fans wondering how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Spooks the Gang
In the teaser shows the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — receiving a brand new plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.
Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters seem to view it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.
Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
One thing the teaser doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is returned with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (the actress), traveling with a carnival and helping giveaway items find good homes.
Surely, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in Bonnie's room without warning is a little strange, though. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have come back with him. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?
Continuity from the Previous Film
Fortunately, some elements are carrying over from the prior film. The final act Woody did before setting off for his new life was pass his symbol of authority to Jessie (Joan Cusack), entrusting her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip displays the insignia attached to her shirt.
It is hoped she is still the driving force among the toys.
Toy Story 5 debuts on June 19, 2026.
