The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
