Astronaut Reveals Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.
She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

In the time since achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the flight, including elevated attention for her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the edge of space.
